AUBURN, Ind. -- Crosby Excavating, began work on the addition to Auburn Fire Department's District 3 Training Facility earlier this week.
The center is being expanded to incorporate hazardous materials training. The training grounds once complete will include a train tanker car, semi tanker trailer, semi-trailer and a structure to simulate a walkout basement scenario for firefighters. The training grounds will include a storage building and paved roadway for fire apparatuses to utilize during training.
The facility will be located on vacant ground to the south of the current facility.
The addition was made possible with help from the Auburn Redevelopment Commission and DeKalb County Redevelopment Commission.
The training grounds was named the first official State of Indiana Training Facility in 2006 by then Governor Mitch Daniels.
Not only do Auburn firefighters train at the facility, it is also utilized by departments in DeKalb County and Northeast Indiana.
Auburn firefighters participated in more than 330 training exercises in 2024 with over 3,000 hours.
Over 1,300 firefighters utilized the District 3 Training Facility in 2024.
The project will be completed in phases, with the infrastructure being installed by Crosby Excavating.
