Business Development & Special Project Director

The City of Auburn Mayor is seeking a hard-working, self-motivated individual to join his team as a full time Business Development & Special Project Director.  The individual, at the direction of the Mayor, is responsible for directing and coordinating programs and projects.  The candidate must be an ambassador for the community, the City and its initiatives.


Essential JOBS Duties AND Responsibilities

Special Project Management

  • Develops and implements programs to carry out the City’s vision more effectively.
  • Assembles the project team, coordinates the preparation of work objectives, assigns individual responsibilities, identifies appropriate resource needs and budgets, develops a schedule including deadlines, prioritizes workload to ensure timely completion of project in meeting interim/final deadlines/milestones, and assists in monitoring associated expenditures throughout project lifecycle.
  • Develops and reviews complex project plans and budgets, works with stakeholders and team members to understand problems, focus on resolving issues, and escalating as necessary to meet timelines.
  • Assists in negotiation of contracts for the acquisition of property and processes income generated by sale of property.
  • Overseas professional contracts and/or consultants providing services for city projects: participates in the evaluation and selection of contractors/consultants; interfaces with and monitors the contractors/consultants to ensure timely and quality completion of the project; facilitates cooperation with the project throughout the City departments; and provides information and support as needed.
  • Serves as primary point of contact for Special Projects, Communications and Complaints.
  • Works effectively with cross functional staff, other project managers, multiple levels of leadership business partners, and vendors, as necessary.
  • Works with all departments to ensure the City’s agenda and objectives are carried out and understood.
  • Provides support/direction to resolve time-sensitive operational issues within City Departments.
  • Leads project teams and manages activities associated with projects that are typically cross departmental or organizational in scope.
  • Maintains awareness of new trends and advances, maintains professional affiliations, and attends workshops and training as appropriate.


  • Aggressively looks for federal, state, and local funding opportunities. Secures assistance to make these efforts successful.
  • Coordinates and facilitates yearly goal planning session for the Mayor, Board of Public Works and Safety and Common Council in addition to all departments and budget categories.
  • Coordinate with Departments in the development of projects incorporated in a city-wide capital improvement plan.


  • Attends and speaks before the Board of Works, City Council and other city related boards as required.
  • Assists with preparation of remarks and speeches for use by the Mayor at events. Prepares briefings for the Mayor regarding city issues.
  • May attend and speak at various meetings, functions and/or events on behalf of the Mayor, ensuring that the Mayor receives all necessary follow-up information.
  • May make presentations regarding the progress of city projects and initiatives.
  • Serves as City liaison to various civic or governmental organizations and other relevant committees, taskforces, boards, and commissions.
  • Interacts regularly with officials from other municipalities, school boards, Chamber of Commerce, DeKalb County Economic Development Partnership and local community business leaders and organizations.
  • Coordinates community engagement outreach for the Mayor to neighborhoods, groups and organizations.
  • Assists Mayor with development of strategies, policies and complex planning.
  • Coordinates and communicates with county, state and federal elected officials on matters of business development.



  • Bachelor’s degree in business or related business field is preferred.
  • A minimum of 4-10 years of experience in municipal management or related role.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage workload.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Leadership, team building and public speaking expertise.
  • Strong networking skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Windows.
  • Ability to quickly learn and understand City business operations and processes.
  • Must be organized, detail oriented and customer focused.



  • Vacation, holidays, personal days, health insurance, life insurance, flexible spending accounts, and City-paid PERF annuity and retirement.
  • $60,000 – $75,000 salary depending upon experience.
