Address signs help first responders

Address SignFriday, November 10, 2023

AUBURN, Ind. – The DeKalb County Fire Chief’s Association sells green address signs for residents living within DeKalb County.

DeKalb County zoning regulations require county residents to have a green address sign in front of their property. This includes residents living within the City’s Extra-Territorial Jurisdiction. The ETJ overlay district encompasses a two-mile radius from the City limits. Those residents living within the City’s ETJ must comply to the county’s regulations.

The DeKalb County Board of Commissioners approved the address sign regulation on June 29, 1998.

Signs can be purchased at the Auburn Fire Station 2, 902 S. Grandstaff Dr., for $10 (cash or check only).

All street address numbers may be displayed on a mailbox, if the mailbox is located at your driveway, if not it must be posted at the edge of a driveway. Signs shall be visible when traveling in either direction. The street address numbers shall be placed between three and five feet high, above road grade.

In order to aid emergency response after dark as requested by the DeKalb-Steuben Firefighters Association, all street address numbers must be white reflective lettering on a green background, which can be seen easily when viewed from the street while in a vehicle.
