Safety Tips
Thefts From Vehicles
- Park your vehicle in a well-lit area when out, and as close as possible to your residence when home.
- Always lock your car at night.
- Remove valuables from your vehicle, or keep them out of view.
- Report any suspicious activity to the Auburn Police Department immediately.
House Security
- Always lock your doors and windows even when leaving for "just a minute."
- Never leave a house key under a doormat, in a flowerpot or on the ledge of the door. These are the first places burglars look.
- Install dead bolt locks with a one-inch strong metal bar extending into the doorframe on all exterior doors.
- Ensure that sliding doors and windows have "ventilation" locks as well as auxiliary locks to bolster security.
- Include good locks for garage, cellar, patio or other doors that lead out through storage areas or a spare room.
- Use timers so that lights, radio and TV go on and off throughout the house to indicate someone is home.
- Never open the door without knowing who is there.
- Consider alarm systems.
- Mark your valuables with your driver's license number preceded by the letters "IN." Burglars don't want marked merchandise because it is difficult to fence and evidence of guilt if they are caught.
- Photograph those items that cannot be engraved (jewelry, silverware, antiques).
Bicycle Safety
- Always wear your helmet.
- Do not ride on the handlebars or the back of a bike.
- Signal your turns.
- Use lights at night so others can see you (front: white; rear: red).
- Never carry an object that prevents you from keeping both hands on the handlebars.
- Always stop at stop signs.
- Ride in the same direction that traffic is going.
- Follow the same laws that apply to automobiles.
Moped Safety
Note: Indiana law mandates the safety rules below.
- Ensure you have a valid identification card, drivers license or a public passenger chauffeurs license.
- Never pull or tow anyone on bicycles, skateboards, roller skates or any other items.
- Do not operate mopeds on an interstate highway or sidewalk.
- Maintain a speed no greater than 25 miles per hour.
- May not carry passenger unless designed for more than one occupant.
- Wear protective headgear and glasses if you are under the age of 18.
- Follow the same laws that apply to automobiles.
