Crime Prevention During the Holidays

Posted on November 30, 2011

With the busy Holiday season upon us, the Auburn Police Department would like to remind everyone to keep some simple safety tips in mind to help avoid becoming a victim of a crime.

Good locks, simple precautions, neighborhood awareness, and common sense can help prevent most property crimes.

Locks, Doors, and Windows
  • Install and use good deadbolt locks in your doors (about half of all burglars enter through unlocked doors and windows).
  • Secure sliding glass doors with locks or a rigid wooden dowel wedged in the track.
  • Lock double-hung windows by sliding a bolt or nail into a hole drilled at a downward angle through the top of each sash and into the frame.
  • Don’t leave Christmas gifts in your home where they can be viewed from home windows or doors.
Outside
  • Trim back shrubbery hiding doors or windows. Cut back tree limbs that could help a thief climb to second story windows.
  • Make sure all porches, entrances, and yards are well lit.
  • Maintain the neighborhood. Dark alleys, litter, and rundown areas attract criminals.
Key Sense
  • Do not hide house keys in mail boxes, planters, or under doormats.
  • Do not put personal identification on key rings.
  • Leave only your ignition key with mechanics or parking attendants.
  • If you lose the keys to your home or move into a new home, change the locks immediately.
Answering the Door
  • Install a peephole or viewer in all entry doors so you can see who is outside without opening the door.
  • Do not trust door chains. They can be easily broken.
  • Don't open the door to anyone you don't know. Insist service personnel verify their identity before allowing them in.
Going Away
  • Make your home appear occupied when you go out.
  • Leave lights on and the radio playing.
  • Keep your garage door closed and locked.
  • Use timing devices to turn inside lights on and off.
  • If you will be gone several days, arrange to have the mail and papers stopped or picked up. Half of all home burglaries occur during the day when alert neighbors could spot and report the thieves.

Auburn Police do provide a house check program for those persons who will be away from home for an extended period of time. You can view the requirements and sign up to have the Police Department check your home here

Shopping
  • Stay alert to your surroundings.
  • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash.
  • Shop during daylight hours if possible.
  • Avoid wearing expensive or excessive jewelry or carrying a purse.
  • Park in a well-lit area.
  • Place purchased items out of sight. Use your trunk if possible.
  • Lock your vehicle doors. Have your keys in hand and ready when returning to your car.
  • Tell someone where you are going and how long you plan on being gone.
Traveling
  • Make sure your vehicle is in good operating condition.
  • Tell someone where you are going and your planned route of travel.
  • Carry a cell phone. Ensure that it is charged.
  • Place emergency supplies in your vehicle.
    • First Aid Kit
    • Flashlight
    • Snacks – Energy Bars, Snack Mix etc.
    • Water
    • Shovel
    • Extra gloves, coat, hat and a blanket.
  • Keep your vehicle doors locked. Wear your seatbelt.
  • Carry a spare vehicle key.

As always, the Auburn Police Department encourages everyone to report any crime or suspicious activity as soon as possible. Be a good observer and, if possible, write down descriptions of vehicles, persons, and license plate numbers.

If you are interested in more information on crime prevention please contact Dwight Myers with the Auburn Police Department at 260-920-3200 Ext.1950 or email at dlmyers@ci.auburn.in.us.

The City of Auburn Water Department will be flushing all city-owned fire hydrants in cul-de-sacs and non-looped water mains beginning Mon. November 14th through Wednesday November 23th. Flushing will be done Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.  Flushing may stir up mineral deposits in the water main causing a discoloration of the water. This discoloration poses no threat to health and is safe to consume. If you notice discolored water in your home, run all cold water taps for 3-5 minutes or until the water clears before laundering whites.

Hydrant flushing keeps the water mains clean and ensures the greatest quality of water throughout the entire system. Flushing also helps to ensure the fire hydrants are working properly for fire protection purposes.

For more information, contact the Auburn Water Department at 260.925.5711, weekdays, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
