K-9 & Narcotics Detection
The Auburn Police
Department police K-9’s have been trained and are certified to detect the
presence of marijuana, methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, crack, and ecstasy. The
K-9’s are trained by Allen County Master Trainer Deputy Robert Compton. Each K-9
and handler goes through a 14 week training session. Once each K-9 and handler
graduates, they are certified through the International Police Work Dog
Association.
Here are some of the other
areas in which K-9’s are trained along with their handlers:
·
K9s are trained
for tracking - scent detection of human scent and following the footsteps of an
individual who has left an area on foot.
·
K-9s teams
search for lost persons.
·
Building
searches require the K9's to locate individuals who may be hiding inside a
structure.
·
K9s assist in
the capture of dangerous criminals by trailing their path of travel.
·
K9s conduct
area searches to detect fleeing hiding criminals.
·
K9s assist in
evidence recovery by detecting a human scent which has been transferred to items
recently handled by humans. Items can be located in any indoors or outdoors
setting.
·
K9s perform
article searches after a crime has occurred such as searching for shell casings
after a shooting in areas sometimes as large as a football field.
·
K9s back up
their Officer partners on all types of patrol calls.
K-9 Unit Demonstrations
The Auburn Police Department K-9 Unit frequently provides
demonstrations to the public. These demonstrations showcase many of the units'
capabilities. These demonstrations, which are usually done for schools and
benevolent organizations, can be scheduled by calling (260) 920-3200.
Donations
Since the inception of the program, our K-9 division has operated
entirely on donations from the community.
The K-9 Team is an integral part of our regular patrol force, and works
continuously to remove illegal drugs from our streets while protecting our
residents and police officers. Our K-9 Program provides an invaluable service to
our community, and this program would not exist if not for the generous support
of our citizens.
If you are interested in providing financial support to our K-9 program, for
maintenance of equipment or K-9’s care, or of you would like more information
about our K-9 Program, please email
Christi Workman
or
Sgt. Sean Kahkola.
