The Auburn Police
Emergency Response Team was formed in 2002 in response to the growing risk of
serious, violent crimes and increased narcotic trafficking and manufacturing in
and around the Auburn area. The Auburn E.R.T. currently provides services to
citizens of Auburn, Garrett, Butler, Waterloo, DeKalb County and provides
immediate mutual aid response with Northeast Indiana SWAT. Collectively, teams
from Auburn, DeKalb County, Steuben County, Noble and LaGrange Counties comprise
the Northeast Indiana SWAT Team. When called to an incident, Northeast Indiana
SWAT forms one team that is highly trained and equipped to deal with almost any
situation. Unfortunately, smaller rural departments find it difficult to
properly equip, train and maintain manpower staffing levels. Smaller agencies
also find it difficult to fund these teams due to the high cost of overtime and
the even higher cost of specialized equipment.
In the past, other
agencies were called to handle these high risk situations taking a minimum
response time of one to three hours to arrive on scene. The Auburn Police
Department is now capable of providing a highly trained and well equipped group
of officers with a
response time of approximately 30 minutes. The Auburn E.R.T.
responds to all high risk calls including: felony warrant service,
barricaded subjects, hostage incidents, drug raids, felony search warrants,
civil disturbances, and personal protection.

Team members undergo a
minimum of eight to twelve hours of training each month to ensure their skills
and tactics remain sharp. Each member is required to have a minimum of two years
experience before being accepted onto the team, and must complete a week long
Basic SWAT School. Some members will go on to complete the Federal Bureau of
Investigations Basic SWAT School. Continued training, along with specialized
schools, make the Auburn E.R.T. a highly trained and well equipped unit to
handle almost any crisis.
