Policing
Community
Policing, simply put, is a cooperative effort between the community and the
police department to identify problems and search for a solution.
The solution is then accomplished by pooling the resources and the
efforts of the community members, police and local government. Policing
concepts in the past have tended to isolate the police from the community.
Community policing assists the police officer to get back to the original
concept of policing by allowing the officer to be a part of the commu nity.
Effective community policing is based on the contact between the officers
and the community. The officer
develops a good working knowledge of the day-to-day activities of the community
and is a familiar face to the members of the community he or she serves.
As the officer becomes a familiar face in the neighborhood, the community
will become more comfortable with the officer and is more likely to ask the
officer for advice before a situation becomes serious.
