The real meaning of Memorial Day

For many, Memorial Day means cookouts, family get-togethers and, if you’re lucky, a day off work. But for some, it’s a painful reminder of what their family has sacrificed—and the loved one who is no longer with them.

Memorial Day was established to remember the men and women who lost their lives while serving in the United States Armed Forces. This extends all the way from the Civil War to present day.

This Memorial Day touches very close to home for one family in our community. Auburn resident Army Sgt. JaBraun Knox was killed in the line of duty last week in Afghanistan. Sgt. Knox was a young man with a bright future, including a wife and an infant son.

So, this Monday, while at the pool or the park celebrating with family and friends, don’t forget the real meaning of Memorial Day. Honor those who have served and are serving right now. And remember Sgt. Knox’s family and all those like them who pay the ultimate price for freedom.
